President
Allen Chamber of Commerce
Sharon Mayer, IOM was named president of the Allen Chamber of Commerce in August of 1997. Having begun her career in Chamber work as a part-time employee at the Arlington Chamber of Commerce in 1989, Mayer quickly moved up the ranks.
She served as assistant to the membership director; special projects coordinator; and ultimately was appointed vice president for Chamber Services, a position that oversaw the communications, membership development and retention, and special events functions of the 1200 member organization.
In 1995, Mayer accepted the position as president of the DeSoto Chamber where she was instrumental in increasing the membership two-fold, securing funding which allowed the Chamber to establish a reserve fund and establishing many small business initiatives that are still ongoing.
During her tenure at the Arlington Chamber, she completed Institute for Organizational Management (IOM) in record time – a six-year program fast-tracked to four. Continuing Education in Chamber work included two IAM (Institute for Advanced Management) courses – SMU & Colorado Springs Institute programs.
Mayer completed the Leadership Arlington program while serving as chamber liaison to the steering committee and was subsequently reserved as alumni coordinator. She is also a graduate of the Leadership Grand Prairie program and served as their alumni president for two years. In addition, she attended college at the University of Texas at Arlington and has a paralegal certification from that institution.
Mayer has four children; David, Christopher, Jennifer and Joshua and three grandchildren. In 1997, Sharon married Paul Mayer, president of the Garland Chamber of Commerce, and inherited two additional children – Zachary & Mackenzie.
Working with other Chambers and within the State Association is extremely important to Mayer. She has facilitated retreats for area Chambers for the past three years and has assisted in the planning and facilitation for annual programs and chamber basics courses hosted annually by TCCE. Sharon joined the board of regents for the Center for Chamber Excellence in 2004, participates as an instructor for membership basics and currently serves president of the board of regents. Sharon serves on the board of directors for the Western Association of Chamber Executives (WACE.)
In 2001, Mayer was honored by her peers in the chamber community with the Texas Chamber of Commerce Executives Outstanding Service Award. She served as 2007 Chairman of Board for that organization. And, in 2006 she was recognized as one of the 21 for the 21st Century in Collin County by Inside Collin County Business.
